Botataung Pagoda

Botataung Pagoda in Yangon, Myanmar

Despite the fact that this pagoda is not as large, Botataung Pagoda was constructed before Shwedagon Pagoda, and is the first temple in the world with the sacred hair relic of Buddha.

The name ‘Botataung’ implies ‘1,000 military warriors’, who escorted two siblings bringing the 8 strands of Buddha’s hair relic from India to Okkalapa in the sixth century B.C., was delineated in the gallery.

Situated adjacent to the Yangon River, The Pagoda has a marvelous perspective of it. Not at all like many other older shrines, the pagoda is not a solid core but is hollow, so visitors may enter inside the cavity.
