Gubyaukgyi Temple (Wetkyi-in)

Gubyaukgyi Temple

Gubyaulgyi Temple (the Great Painted Cave Temple), an Indian-style spire, is located close to the Wetkyi-in village. The fascinating part is that not like any other sanctuary, it is based on the 13th century cave temple with a rectangular plan instead of a square one with the eastern vestibule much shorter.

Just as the name explained, the most attractive to visitors coming to Gubyaulgyi temple is the fresco of jataka – the biography of the Buddha.

Sadly, however, in 1899 some of them were removed by Dr. Thomann who visited Myanmar. Stucco sculptures on the outer wall of this sanctuary are particularly well-preserved.
