You wish to explore Ha Giang, but you may be wondering when is the best time to visit and how to get there? Follow us and find out more about Ha Giang so that you can plan your trip carefully before setting off.

Ha Giang weather – When is the best time to travel?

Ha Giang is a beautiful place that can be visited all year round; however, the natural landscape will change according to each season. Ha Giang has a tropical monsoon climate and can be divided into four distinct seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The average temperature ranges from 21,6 degrees Celsius to 23,9 degrees Celsius, with the highest temperature reaching 40 degrees Celsius in June and July and the lowest falling to 2,2 degrees Celsius in January.

Spring (January – March)

Spring is the dry season, so there is little rainfall and a lot of sunshine. The climate in March is especially pleasant, about 15-20 degrees Celsius, which is really suitable for trekking. However, in January and February, it is quite cold, about 10-15 degrees Celsius.

Perhaps this is the best time of the year to travel to Ha Giang, as in early January peach flowers and plum flowers begin to bloom everywhere. These colorful flowers make the entire province even more gorgeous and romantic. Coming to Ha Giang in spring, you can have the chance to witness the local celebrations of the Tet holidays which often happen in late January or early February, and immerse in cultural festivals like the Buffalo Fighting Festival and Horses Fighting Festival.

Summer (April – August)

April still has pleasant weather with little rainfall and an average temperature being 24 degrees Celsius in the daytime. If you travel to Ha Giang this time, do not miss the Khau Vai love market, a special event held only once a year. This is an opportunity for vendors from all over the province to come and sell their products and for ex-lovers to meet each other again. From May onwards, the weather becomes hotter but still cooler than in cities in the delta. The temperature can be about 30-37 degrees Celsius. It is also the beginning of the rainy season, so prepare yourself with raincoats or umbrellas in case of heavy showers.

Summer is the time farmers start working in the fields. The Hmong and Dao people grow corn while the Tay people irrigate their rice fields. In June, Ha Giang is mostly covered with the green color of the crop and the forest.

Autumn (September – October)

In autumn, it is pretty mild with average temperatures being 28 and 29 degrees Celsius in September and October, respectively. There is still some rainfall in these months but much less than summer months, so check the weather carefully to avoid that.

Also, this is the best time to admire the beauty of the rice terraces, given that they begin to turn their color into yellow, ready to be harvested. Make sure to check-in and take some photos of Hoang Su Phi which has the most stunning terraced fields in Vietnam.

Winter (November – December)

The weather in November has a mild temperature, about 24 degrees Celsius on average but it can be as low as 10 degrees Celsius in the evening. In December, it is cool and dry with temperatures averaging 19 degrees Celsius in the daytime and but 5-10 degrees Celsius in the evening. Therefore, it is essential to pack warm clothes to avoid the chill.
Winter is also the season of buckwheat flowers which are a symbol of Ha Giang tourism. These tiny pink and purple flowers bloom on the terraced fields, attracting a large number of flower lovers to visit Ha Giang every year. If you are lucky, you may have the chance to witness snow in some parts of Ha Giang, especially Dong Van and Meo Vac District.
