Maha Myat Muni Pagoda in Mandalay

Other interesting place worth exploring in Mandalay is Maha Myat Muni Pagoda implying the Great Sage or Great Exalted. It is also called the Rakhaing (Arakan) Pagoda or Payagyi or Great Pagoda. A Bronze Status of 4 meter high is housed under the majestic building. The Status is one of the holiest and most highly thought of Buddha Images in Myanmar. As indicated by history, it was cast in Rakhine State at the time of the Lord Buddha and brought to Mandalay by the delegated Prince of King Bodawpaya in 1784. It is thought to be a wish-grating Buddha among Myanmar citizens.

The Maha Myat Muni Buddha Status is believed to being cast in front of Buddha by himself and is the closest representation of the Buddha. When it was finished it was sanctified by the Buddha himself, henceforth the face of the image is most venerated. Everyday at 4:30am, a group of monks would wash the Buddha’s face and brush the teeth. Numerous devotees apply layers of gold leaf on the status to gain merits, so much that its original shape has now been distorted by a 15cm thick gold covered.
