Wat Ho Phra Keo Temple: One of the most unique characteristics in Vientiane is visiting the beautiful temples and wats there, and Wat Ho Phra Keo is one which visitors cannot ignore. It is so-called as a “temple of the Emerald Buddha” built in 1565 by King Setthathirat as a place to keep the Emerald of Buddha statue.
In the past, the King and Royal Family used to come here to pray and lots of rare royal objects are displayed for their using. In 1779, an invasion under the lead of General Chakri destroyed its origin and then they brought the Emerald of Buddha Statue to Wat Ho Phra Keo Temple in Bangkok. In 1828, after its renovation, Wat Ho Phra Keo was destroyed one more time by Thailand people. At that time, the King of Thailand is a Buddhist, so that he made the same another of Emerald of Buddha Statue and replaced the old one.
In 1936 and 1942, Wat Ho Phra Keo was rebuilt by Prince Souvanna Phouma who was trained in French architecture. Nowadays, it is no longer used as a place for pray, but a museum with lots of royal remains which attract you much such as: the golden throne, Khmer Buddha statue, wood sculpture, stone carving related to Buddhism…
