Mandalay Travel Guide

Located on the north of Yangon and on the east bank of the Irrawaddy River, Mandalay is the second-largest city and the last royal capital of Burma. Hot, busy and not instantly beautiful, the city is known by travelers as a transport and day-trip hub and a religious landscape of pagodas, incredible churches, Indian temples and prominent mosques. Pagodas dotted across the streets of the city as well as its outskirts host iconic statues and relics that may be older than Mandalay itself have been brought from all over Asia.

West of centre towards the fascinating Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) riverside, shady backstreets link a slew of seldom visited sacred monasteries. And there’s plenty of fascination to be found delving into a range of craft workshops and arts performances. Visitors are enchanted with a diverse array of food and it can be extremely tasty if you find the right spots. Nobody should go through Mandalay without a try of dining at a Burmese teashop, a Shan buffet, a Chinese restaurant and an Indian roti street stall.
